ALS, written in an unidentified hand and signed by Joel R. Poinsett, Secretary of War, to Edward P. Bagby, Governor of Alabama. The letter transmitted a copy of a proposed agreement, which is not present, concluded by the United States with John Ross and other Cherokee leaders regarding their removal to lands west of the Mississippi River. Poinsett briefly discusses protection of states' interests and requests that Alabama not pursue land claims during the removal.
